Mel Kel in Cali

I don’t know how I get so behind in blogging, but I vow to keep this thing up to date on everything I do in Cali.

After my birthday weekend in Vegas, Mel Kel had 3 more nights in California. Sunday night we were still feeling good even after our long drive that day so we made it out to Hermosa beach. We went to baja sharkeez, a place that reminds me of seacrets only a lot smaller. But it is ALWAYS a party in there.

On Monday we went to Venice and I showed Melissa the lovely sites on the boardwalk. Venice is a place that I personally love and hate. It’s a place where all weirdos and homeless people go to hang out. You are sure to have a lot of good people watching. But I love it because the beach is beautiful, there are good bars and there is an awesome bike path. We rented some bikes and biked up to Santa Monica. Melissa got to see the Santa Monica pier and then we biked back to Venice. We took a look at the Venice canals from the car then headed back to my apartment. That night we were feeling exhausted and ended up staying in. Vegas was really starting to catch up with us!

On Tuesday we did a hollywood day. I was able to take Melissa on Hollywood blvd to see the stars, toured madam Tussaud’s wax museum, went to the Griffith observatory for sunset, saw the Hollywood sign and then went to an improv show. It was the ultimate Hollywood day!

We finally made it home from our jam packed day around midnight and had to wake up at 0400 to get Melissa to the airport.
I was sad to see her go back to Baltimore! It was so great to finally have one of my best friends in Cali! It reminded me if 2 things. 1, how nice it is living in Baltimore where I have a ton of friends and 2, how much nicer Cali would be if my best friends lived here!!
I guess you can’t have it all. But I’m just glad Melissa got to spend my birthday with me, see California and we both shared our first time in Vegas together!

Vegas Night 2

My birthday was the Saturday we were in Vegas! We woke up rather late given our 5:00 bedtime. Once we woke up, we had a special birthday lunch at Chipotle. By the time we got moving and had lunch it was time to get ready for concert night 2! This time, we were in about the 8th row but had aisle seats instead of right next to the stage. The seats were still incredible!! Pauly D was sitting about 8 rows behind us and some bachelor contestants were in our row.

We weren’t in these seats for long but didn’t move far and spent the majority of the concert in the second seats we found. On the second night we saw Ke$ha, Paul McCartney, 30 seconds to mars, Drake, Miley Cyrus, Tim McGraw, Marron 5, Bruno Mars, Miguel and Zedd. We didn’t even know who thirty seconds to mars was but they ended up being our favorite and put on the best show! They had fortune cookie papers fall and huge balls which everyone hit around during their performance. It was soo fun! My favorite from this night was Bruno Mars, I just love him! He sounded awesome and put on a good show. Of course the ticket owners showed up just before Justin Timberlake came on so we really didn’t see him, but we heard him!

Again, we ended up leaving the concert early but this time we didn’t make it out on the town. We knew we had an early wake up call and long boring drive back to Cali in the morning so I think it was the best choice. The next day we went to a bar to watch the ravens and completely forgot to bet on them!! I’m still kicking myself since the Texans were favored I think we would’ve won a decent amount of money. Oh well!!

NEW HAT Alex got me for my bday!

After the game we went to The Belagio then did some souvenirs shopping before embarking on our road trip to Cali.

The drive back felt like the longest drive ever but we finally made it! I CAN NOT wait to go back to Vegas and have some more awesome experiences. Being there for the concert was one of the best experiences of my life, but I’m pumped to go to the clubs and do some more gambling.

A tip for road trips: We listened to a comedy station on pandora for the drive back and it kept us laughing the whole way and made the drive a lot more enjoyable. Try it on your next road trip!

Vegas for my birthday- night 1

On my bucket list of things to do in California, Vegas was probably #1. We were so lucky that Tom works for 1iota and we were able to get tickets as seat fillers to the I heart radio concert in Vegas! Even better, the concert fell on my birthday weekend. All I can say is, it was the second best birthday of my life! (The first was last year when Alex surprised me with skydiving in OC.) He sure does have a knack for making my birthdays verrry special!!

On our way to Vegas we stopped at the Hoover Dam to do a little sight seeing. I really didn’t know what to expect when I got there, so I was quite impressed. I kinda wish we had time to take one of the guided tours because I wanted to learn more about it rather than just see it. I guess I’ll have to google it at a later date to educate myself. It was awesome because when we first got there it was empty and by the time we were leaving we looked again and it was filling up! It really was a beautiful place to see.

While the concerts were extremely long, they were worth every second. On our first night, We were able to sit in the 4th row right next to the stage to see some of our favorite bands. Now, I never thought I cared about where I sat at a concert until I had these seats. I don’t know if I can appreciate a concert again being in the nosebleeds. From the 4th row, we saw robin thicke, Keith urban, fun, p diddy. Eventually the people whose seats we were filling showed up and we were moved to higher ground. (Btw, can you imagine buying thousand dollar tickets for one of the best concerts of all time and not showing up until halfway through the concert?! Rich people can be so dumb.) From higher seats on the first night, we saw Elton John, Chris Brown, Muse, Tiesto and Benny Benassi. We did leave before Kitty purry and Queen came on, but I was OK with that.

We ended up hanging around MGM grand until Tom and the 1iota boys got off. After they got off we headed to the hotel for a pregame and stayed out gambling until 5:00!! OMG, do I love Vegas?! I can not wait to get back!! Before I go again I’m saving a bunch of money to spend on gambling. I hated that I really didn’t have much leeway with my money and couldn’t really afford to lose much on this trip!

For the sake of this post getting way too long, I’m gonna recap night 2 at a later date!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

Wine and cheese date night

A few weeks back I wanted to plan a budget friendly date night for Alex and I. I wanted to spend some quality time with him but knew that I didn’t really want to go out. I was craving a wine and cheese night, so I figured I would create an in apartment wine and cheese night. Of course I did a Google search and got some ideas from internet bloggers; most things they recommended were ideas that I already had.
I love surprises so I kept Alex in the dark. I headed to Trader Joe’s and picked up fresh bread, a box of assorted crackers and a few different types of cheese. To keep a nice variety I picked hard and soft cheeses. I got a variety pack of goat cheese which included plain, five pepper and garlic and herb, brie, Gouda and a dubliner Irish cheese. The Irish cheese came recommended from an employee at Trader Joe’s and it actually ended up being our least favorite. Of the other 3, we couldn’t pick our favorite because they were all so different!

Next I headed over to Bevmo and got 3 bottles of wine and they were having their awesome wine sale: buy one bottle get one for 5 cents! I got one bottle of white and two red. I also cut up some grapes and apples to pair with the cheese and crackers.

Alex loved the creative stay at home date night and we had such a great time! I definitely recommend this date night if you are trying to do something fun and inexpensive with your boyfriend!

(I had more pictures but remember that time my phone got stolen?! yea, my pics are gone with it! grr! still bitter)

Anyway, hope you have an awesome Wednesday!

Denver ups and downs

The city of Denver was awesome, and I’d really like to go back. BUT this was one of those trips that by 3 days in, I was ready for it to be over. I looked at Alex and said “I can’t wait to go home!” If you would’ve told me before the trip that’s how I’d be thinking during the trip, I’d never believe you! So, to help you understand, I’ve decided to compile a list of the ups and downs of Denver.

The UPS

1. Seeing an away Ravens Game and experiencing a new stadium. Sports authority field was awesome and we had a blast with all the fellow Ravens fans at the tailgate.

2. Finding out on our first day in Denver that some friends from Baltimore were in town for the game. Little Cigs (aka John) is one of Alex’s friends from CHC and they worked together at the Hobbit. Also, I met 2 of the guys lil cigs was in Denver with when I was home in Baltimore on 4th of July and it was cool to see them again!

DSC02930

3. Catching up with friends we hadn’t seen in a while. Alex’s friend Greg lives in Denver and was at the tailgate. And Eric, Teresa’s cousin who I met on the cruise came to the tailgate as well.

4. The weather! I was sweating so much, but I loved every second of that 90 degree heat! I’ve been missing HOT weather here in California.

5. Going to the Coors brewery. It was a self guided tour and at the end you got 3 free samples, regular size beers at that! We got some souvenirs and it was cool to see Golden, a small town by Denver.

5. Thanks to a recommendation from Eric, going to comedy works and seeing Mike Birbiglia. Seriously, if you ever get the chance to see this guy, do it! Alex and I laughed so hard we were crying. And we laughed pretty much the entire time. He was HILARIOUS!

DSC02929

6. Discovering awesome bars that need to make their way to the area where I live. The first was called The 1up, it was a bar full of old time video games like ski ball, frogger, pac man, big buck hunter and our favorite, group pac man! It was seriously one of the coolest bars ever! (but it was really hot in there, no AC!) AND the games were only 25 cents each to play! Just like the good ole days. After The 1up we went to a rooftop bar by the Rockies stadium. There were a few bars in that vicinity that were completely open rooftop bars. It was so fun, I loved being outside! And the DJ was the best DJ Alex and I have ever heard in our life. Quick side note, did you know the Rockies color is purple and The Bronco’s is orange? the same colors as Baltimore sports, but for opposite teams. It got quite confusing!

The DOWNS

1. The place we stayed was less than stellar. I found a room on airbnb and it wasn’t that great. I’ve heard great things about airbnb and it’s a cheap way to be able to travel to new places. I’ve even recommended it to two people who hadn’t heard of it before and they loved it! We picked the wrong place, I guess. The house was in a sketchy neighborhood and I didn’t feel very safe. The guys who lived there were up at 7 am every day stomping around like elephants on the wood floors above is. There were goats in the backyard so the room was infested with flies. And to top it off, there was no AC! (remember that 90 degree heat I was telling you about?! yea, I lied.. I didn’t love it during the seconds I was sleeping.)

2. Losing opening game, at an away field. I can be a bit of a negative Nancy when it comes to the Ravens so the fact that we lost the game and it was on the second day was not a very good start to the trip. It just put a sour taste in my mouth. The heckling after the game wasn’t too bad but it was enough to put me in a pretty terrible mood.

3. At the end of an awesome night in Denver (comedy show, 1up and rooftop bar with best DJ ever) I got pick pocketed and my Iphone was stolen out of my purse. UGHH! Just typing it again makes me so angry/want to cry. That dumbass cost me almost $400.

4. Alex had to work while we were in Denver. We ended up getting a rental car, which was clutch but we had to use it to drive Alex to and from Whole Foods and it kind of stopped us from being able to do certain things and sight see. Plus, he didn’t get to experience too much of Denver.

5. Alex (who already didn’t get to see much of Denver) got a stomach bug and was sick for an entire day and night.

6. We didn’t get to see much of the natural beauty of Colorado. I don’t know if it was poor planning or what, but I’m really regretting that.

As you can see, it was kind of a weird trip with a lot of good and bad things going on. The ups of the trip were really really awesome, and I am very thankful that I have a job and lifestyle that allows me to travel. But this trip had a tad too many negative things going on with it! I’d say I definitely need to get back to Denver and give it another shot!

NOW.. One of my best friends from high school, Melissa is coming to visit me and she gets here at 10 pm tonight!! I am sooo excited!! We are headed to Vegas tomorrow for my 25th Birthday weekend and the I HEART RADIO MUSIC FESTIVAL!! We are all beyond pumped right now! Never in a million years would I have thought that’s what I’d be doing for my 25th birthday! I can not wait to celebrate and I am hoping & praying that this trip has no downs. Maybe I’ll get lucky and win big in Vegas! 😉

Happy Thursday, I hope you have a great weekend!!

Date day in LA

A few weeks ago, Alex and I decided to have a touristy date day in LA. Earlier in August, I signed us up for tickets to be part of a few studio audiences. The only one we ended up making it to was Chelsea Lately, on date day. We are kind of sick of being in the audience for TV shows, it’s a bunch of forced laughter and clapping and there is no celebrity I care about enough to see in person. The Chelsea Lately show was really short which was good because I’ve complained about other shows being too long before. But the waiting in line and seating process was 5x longer than the show itself which didn’t make it seem worth it to me.

While waiting in line for the Chelsea Lately show, Ross Mathews was going through the line interviewing people. We knew someone famous was coming because the girls next to us were freaking out. Alex and I had no idea what his name was but I did recognize him from Chelsea’s show. I looked at Alex and said “I hope to God he doesn’t talk to me.” What do you know, he passes right by the girls who are so excited next to us and comes right to me and says “I like your braid!!” So of course I had to talk back. He wanted to hear some celebrity impersonations so I directed him to Alex. He ended up coming back and talking to us 2 more times. He has a new TV show on E! (link above) that started on September 6th. I didn’t watch the first episode so I’m not sure if we made the cut, but if you happen to see the show and I’m on there, let me know!

After the show we were starving and we have been wanting to try Korean BBQ. So we headed to a place a few minutes away from the show. We weren’t sure what to order but luckily the waitress was very helpful and led us in the right direction. You get 25 side dishes with your meal! (those little white bowls.) It also came with 2 meat choices, steamed egg, tofu soup, salad and rice noodles. The meat was awesome! My favorite was beef bulgogi and I really liked the rice noodles as well. I’ve had both of those dishes home made from a friend who I worked with at Mercy. I just might have to attempt to make them both at home myself.

20130910-143708.jpg

The next thing we knew wanted to do was see an improv show, but we had a ton of time to kill between dinner and then. So we headed to Rodeo drive. I’ve driven through a few times but I have never gotten out of the car. This time we parked and it was neat to go in to all the high end stores. We just strolled around and then had some ice cream and a cupcake! Yum!!

20130910-143735.jpg

After our time on Rodeo drive, we decided to check out the Hollywood sign at night. It looked awesome! I’m really glad we got a chance to check that out. I’ve seen it multiple times during the day but it was even cooler at night!

20130910-143808.jpg

After our sightseeing excursions we headed to a bar next to the improv theater where Alex’s friend met us for a drink. Then we headed over to UCB to see a show called bangarang. A few of the people in the show have been auditioning for SNL and they are HILARIOUS! We laughed so hard, I love every minute of improv!

We are actually hoping to see Bangarang again tonight! Hope everyone has a good rest of the week!!

Santa Monica Pier Concert

A few weeks ago, Tom invited us to go to a pier concert in Santa Monica. Unfortunately, I had work so I wasn’t able to make it. Since I am usually looking for new things to try out here, I did a google search to see what the Pier concert was all about. The pier concert is held on the Santa Monica pier every thursday from July-September. It is sponsored by myspace and completely free to the public. We were able to secure parking online before we left and that is pretty much the only thing you have to worry about. Well, that and what kind of food and drinks we wanted while we were there.

20130824-000351.jpg

20130823-233600.jpg

The concert is held on the pier, but the majority of people hang out on the beach next to the pier. They have a screen set up so you can still see the band and you can hear them too. There was a beer garden and plenty of food trucks. I could not believe how many people were there, the beach was packed!

20130823-233635.jpg

20130824-000336.jpg

Megan and I made a few treats including snickers dip, which was awesome and you should make it. We used pretzels and teddy grahams to dip in it. And we sipped on some mixed drinks as well. I couldn’t help but think how cool it would be if they would hold free beach concerts like this in OCMD.

20130824-000341.jpg

We got to the concert at about 6:30 and stayed til about 9:30. When we left, the music was still going and the beach goers were still partying. It was a fun night and I would like to go back again. We may just keep it local and go to one of the beach concerts near where we live.

20130823-233644.jpg

Hope you have an awesome week!
